Favourite & Unusual ingredients


I dip my finger into the jar and lick and suck the thick, gloopy stuff off. Sometimes I use a teaspoon, it's quite difficult to get it all off in one go, you have to try really hard. People think I'm crazy....... click on the image above to read more.


Saffron




How incredible that the stamens from such a beautiful flower can create such a glorious colour and intoxicating aroma. I put saffron in a lot of things, most white sauces or pasta dishes, anything which would improve with a little sunshine colour. The honey, floral scent is like aromatherapy to me. A few strands, a pinch, can transport a sauce or rice into something exotic and warming ....... click on the image above to read more


Mushrooms


Close your eyes. Imagine a small mystical creature like a leprechaun or a gnome. What are they sitting on? A lily pad? Probably not. More likely they are perched atop a pretty red and white toadstool, called a Fly Agaric. A very idyllic and fairytale like scene. But should one of those unsuspecting little creatures inadvertently bite a chunk out of one of those toadstools, they would hallucinate or vomit for several hours, maybe even suffer a worse fate, because Fly Agarics are deadly poisonous, which is why they are so brightly coloured; a warning to all, and precisely the reason why these deadly mushrooms are still used in fantasies and fairy tales....... click on the image above to read more.
