Scotch eggs with oregano and chili

Please admire the beautiful flower arrangement by Neil..

So, suddenly, it seems Scotch eggs are the snack du jour. Bon Appetit magazine featured them in it's January issue and labelled them their new favourite bar snack. About time. We in the UK have been enjoying these for many, many years. True, they are a much misunderstood thing and often not revered, especially by those of a more health food bent, but they are finally getting some of the recognition they deserve.

Here is a link to a recipe, instructions and tips for you to try these little tasty beauties for yourself. One note: Bon Appetit suggested using crushed corn flakes for the breading. Hmmm. As far as I'm aware, corn flakes have a pretty distinctive flavour of their own, which is not necessary. In my opinion, plain breading or panko with a few added herbs or a little spice is better. (Although in fairness I haven't tried the cornflakes yet...)

As Bon Appetit so succinctly stated: crunchy on the outside, creamy on the inside.
