Steveston, a fishing village about 20km South of Vancouver, is always good for a Sunday afternoon visit. Apart from the British shop selling memories and comforting food of home, it has a great dock with fishermen selling their wares and is the place we bought our salmon last year. This afternoon, we bought some prawns, (thankfully already shelled, as it took me one hour last time), and noticed these intriguing 'alien' looking creatures for sale. Sea urchins or uni, as it is known in Japan, is an edible roe and enjoyed in many parts of the World. I have never bought or cooked it, but on inquiring, the fishermen said he eats it regularly and enjoys the solid piece of yellow roe inside. Next time I may try to gather some courage and buy one or two to try.
4 lb of shelled prawns for $10. A good bargain I think.
